Jesuit Network for Mission and Development - Xavier Network

Xavier Network Keeps Moving Forward

October is the month when most of our networks have their first meeting of the academic year. The Xavier Network had its meeting on October 13 and 15 in this new on-line format that has made it possible to continue working even in the middle of the pandemic. Bearing in mind that we have people connected from Melbourne to Toronto, we have found an acceptable time for all time zones (11.00h to 14.00h CET), we have reduced the duration of the meetings to three hour sessions (more than this time seems inappropriate for on-line meetings) and each meeting consists of two separate sessions in the same week, thus reducing the impact for those who have to go to bed very late (Australia) or get up very early (Canada, USA).

The October meeting was very interesting. As usual we had a review of the working groups of the network (Volunteering, Emergencies, Projects and Advocacy). Special mention had the advocacy work towards COP26, and the review of the active emergency projects such as Nepal, Venezuela, India, Mozambique, Lebanon and Ethiopia, as well as the focus on new interventions in support of Haiti and Afghanistan.

In this meeting the main focus was on the dialogue with the General Treasurer, Tomas McClain, and the representatives of the development offices of the different conferences, in order to advance in the strategic synergy between mission offices, NGOs and development offices, three Jesuit actors in the field of fundraising that, as progress is made in the design of the networks of development offices, undoubtedly need greater coordination and understanding.

Also worth mentioning is the working session with sister organizations from the United States (Magis Americas and Jesuit Mission Inc.) who were invited to the meeting in order to learn about their way of working and horizons as well as their possible progressive incorporation into the Xavier Network.

Our next meeting will be —in a face-to-face format— in Loyola, in March, at the same time as the European meeting of social sector networks.
