There are several initiatives that have emerged in the Ignatian environment to respond to the mandate launched by the 35th General Congregation to enhance global networking in the Society of Jesus, but it is worth highlighting two of them:
In November 2008, lay collaborators and Jesuits from every continent met in El Escorial, Madrid, to reflect on the Ignatian way of doing advocacy. At this meeting, the group identified a number of priority areas in which the Society should establish advocacy networks. This is how the Global Ignatian Advocacy Network (GIAN) emerged.
The second main reaction to the mandate of GC35 took place in April 2012, when an international meeting at Boston College was held to seek the best way to encourage global networking. At that meeting, participants identified the urgent need to carry out a major cultural and organizational transformation of the Society of Jesus and networking was promoted as the smartest way to turn the Society into a truly global body, able to respond the main global challenges of the twenty-first century.
A year away from the 36th General Congregation, the global networks of the Social Apostolate of the Society of Jesus will gather in Loyola at the international meeting “Networking for Justice” to evaluate the impact of networking so far, identify the main lessons learned and propose concrete measures to further enhance networking in the Society of Jesus.
