Dialogue on Draft Migration Policy in India

The goal of our collaboration proposal is

To dialogue on the draft migration policy in India together

Description of our collaboration proposal

India’s NITI Aayog has prepared a Draft Migration Policy, which acknowledges migration as an integral part of development, and it calls for positive government interventions that facilitate internal migration.

With a rights-based solution to migration, the draft states that the policy should “enhances the agency and capability of the community and thereby remove aspects that come in the way of an individual’s own natural ability to thrive”. It has recommended setting up Migration Resource Centres (MRCs) in high migration zones and inter-state migration management bodies in prime migration corridors. While the draft has reference to architecture of social protection, there is yet much to be desired from a human rights and social justice perspective.

In this context, the Migrant Assistance and Information Network (MAIN) is conducting a policy dialogue on “Draft Migration Policy” to explore the contours of the draft migration policy and suggest the needed key elements for the policy on migration in India. The policy discussion will be broadcast on MAIN YouTube channel.
