Healing Earth, the free online environmental science textbook developed by Jesuit collaborators of the International Jesuit Ecology Project and launched 10 years ago, launches its third edition with additional features that enhance its usability.
What would it be like to teach nature if environmental science included an ethical framework, spiritual reflection and a call to action? What if this was done on a digital platform designed, powered and used by students and teachers from all over the world? That is Healing Earth
Developed by the School of Environmental Sustainability at Loyola University Chicago, Healing Earth is a free-access, online textbook which addresses the urgent, vexing environmental issues of our time. Healing Earthprovides an accessible and integrated education on contemporary ecological challenges, calling upon its readers to reflect ethically and spiritually, and to take action that leads us towards a sustainable and just future.
It is designed to fit the mission of secondary schools, universities, and adult education programs. It is the first environmental science textbook to follow Pope Francis’ lead in Laudato Sí
. . . drawing on the results of the best scientific research available today, letting them touch us deeply and provide a concrete foundation for the ethical and spiritual itinerary that follows.
Laudato Sí
Healing Earth approaches socioecological challenges through a holistic lens with the purpose of educating the whole person for positive action in the natural and social world. Readers are presented with a scientific and ethicalfoundation of these challenges that encourages readers to reflect spiritually, and act to heal the Earth. With an international team of scientists, humanists and students, Healing Earth is constantly transforming, always being improved and built upon, and is available in four languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and most recently, Chinese.
The latest edition of Healing Earth features an Online Community Forum open for all users. This is a space that brings together educators and readers from over 140 countries to share pedagogical approaches, educational strategies and nurture the Environmental Action Platform with ideas and initiatives in and outside of the classroom.
Join the Healing Earth community at here now! This work would not have been possible without the guidance, expertise and suggestions from our users just like you. We hope that this community will continue to grow and thrive!
