Description of the Network

Social justice has long been at the heart of the mission of the Society. Our mission today is the service of faith, of which the promotion of justice is an absolute requirement. This makes the Jesuit Social Ministry a fundamental aspect of the Society’s work. The elements of the Jesuit Social Ministry are direct service of those in need, social and cultural analysis, theological reflection on questions of injustice; and campaigning alongside others who strive to make our world a more just place.

JESA is a network of Jesuit social centres and institutions in South Asia that was formally initiated in 1973 to assist the Major Superiors to translate the faith - justice mandate of GC 32 into action in all the ministries and in particular in social action ministry of the Society of Jesus. The primary function of JESA is to encourage and elicit well-studied and analyzed responses and interventions from Jesuits and collaborates in favour of and with the marginalized groups and communities. It would further promote and coordinate on going action-reflections, interactions, research/study and actions leading to greater development and empowerment of the priority communities. It would also gather and disseminate information and knowledge through bulletins, workshops, seminars, trainings and visits.
