In this devastating COVID second wave, the Jesuit Conference of South Asia is engaged in providing immediate relief work in the form of food, medicines and emergency services to the unreached and distressed across India.
This new wave in India generated by COVID-19 exacerbates the situation of vulnerability for millions of people. There are nearly 400,000 infected and over 3,500 dead each day. India currently accounts for 40% of the world’s infections. The scenario is extremely worrying and the threat of the situation getting worse is very real.
The country’s hospitals do not have the capacity to care for the millions of infected people. Medicines are not enough, oxygen is a scarce commodity, and there are not enough beds.
Led by the Jesuit Resource and Response Hub, in collaboration with the Indian Social Institute, the Jesuit Conference of South Asia is coordinating the jesuit emergency response in India. Right now the humanitarian response is developed in 25 states through 20 community kitchens, 16 quarantine centres and 22 shelters. Here you have the main figures:
