The Global Jesuit Network of Schools is gathering to reflect, share and discern a future full of hope. In this event, called COLLOQUIUM JESEDU-Global2021, it is expected to bring together virtually 500 participants from the six Jesuit conferences, the Secretariat for Education and the International Commission for the Apostolate of Jesuit Education.

Although the colloquium officially opens on 28 June 2021 (13:00 GMT), a participatory pre-colloquium experience has been available since 15 May to reflect and share on four key themes: educating for faith, educating for depth, educating for reconciliation and educating for global citizenship. They are available on the Educate Magis website and are open to all participants. The different visions, experiences and contributions are what make such a meeting so rich and valuable.

It is expected that attendees will have participated in these reflection modules by the time the colloquium opens on 28 June, so that everyone will have enough time to reflect on the presentations and interact with each other virtually through the dialogue spaces provided. The fruits of these conversations will be synthesised and presented during the closing ceremony of the JESEDU-Global2021 colloquium.

What are the questions with which we are invited to share?

Educating for Faith

In an increasingly multi-religious and secularised world, how do we educate for faith as inclusive but distinctly Catholic schools? In what ways, can we accompany the youth so that we show them—rather than just tell them—a way to God that leads to a meaningful faith commitment and purpose in life?

The Global Pandemic has underscored every person’s fundamental need for a meaning and purpose of one’s life. How can we as Jesuit and Catholic schools help our students discover theirs?

Educating for Depth

In an age of increasing pluralism, amidst conflicting claims to truth and easy soundbites, how do we educate for depth? In what ways can we accompany our students so that they learn to value truth and to persevere in seeking it, paying full attention to experience and engaging in careful—and even scholarly—reflection to guide their decisions?

How can our classrooms be conducive for deep thinking? How do we define ‘depth’ in our mission today?

Educating for Reconciliation

In a world of increasing polarisation and fragmentation, how do we educate for reconciliation? In what ways can we prepare our students to become agents of reconciliation, willing to walk with the excluded and to take responsibility in caring for our common home?

How can our schools be sanctuaries of reconciliation? How do we define ‘reconciliation’ in our mission today?

Educating for Global Citizenship

In a world where the stranger is increasingly our neighbor, how do we educate for global citizenship? What does it mean—and what does it entail—to act as global citizens today? In what ways can we help our students imbibe a sense of interculturality: the disposition to celebrate—rather than just tolerate and without falling into a superficial relativism—the gift of human diversity and their own culture and the desire to collaborate with others in building a hope-filled future?

How can we as a global network strengthen this rediscovered sense of interconnectedness? In what ways can we guide our students to care for creation and to “walk with the excluded”?

“How do we teach to celebrate the gift of human diversity, of their own culture and the desire to collaborate with others?”

The official opening is on 28 June 2021 (13:00 GMT), where participants will be officially welcomed by the International Secretary for Education of the Society of Jesus, Fr José Alberto Mesa SJ, and Fr General, Rev Fr Arturo Sosa SJ. The opening ceremony will be streamed live on the JESEDU-Global2021 Colloquium Platform.

To access the Colloquium Platform, you need to be a member of the Educate Magis global community. Invite your colleagues to participate in this important global event. If you are not yet a member, please join here.

In addition, the Latin American Federation of Jesuit Schools (FLACSI) is organising a Latin American Pre-Colloquium on Jesuit Education to build on the reflective experience of the II JESEDU-Global2021 Colloquium, aimed at 900 participants from FLACSI schools, provincial networks and sister networks. The event consists of two virtual sessions of two and three hours, respectively, and will take place on 10 and 11 June.

“How can we, as a global network, strengthen the rediscovered sense of interconnectedness?”

After the closing ceremony, from 2-16 July, colloquium participants meet with their regional groups for a regional conversation. There will be six, separately organised and led by the respective ICAJE delegates for North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Madagascar, South Asia and Asia Pacific. They will offer attendees the opportunity to discuss the lines of action and/or regional collaborations resulting from what has been discussed and learned at the colloquium.
