The Global Citizenship Curriculum Project is an initiative of the Task Force on Global Citizenship of the International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU).
In his address to the first assembly of the IAJU in Bilbao, Spain, in 2018, Father Superior Arturo Sosa, SJ emphasized the importance of “education for world citizenship.” In advance of the second assembly in Boston in 2022, the IAJU Task Force on Global Citizenship piloted the Global Citizenship Fellows Program, which convened 31 students from 19 Jesuit institutions in 16 countries for a year-long dialogue about the idea and practice of global citizenship. The fellows met in Boston and presented their work to the IAJU assembly.
The IAJU Global Citizenship Curriculum Project, launched in Boston under the auspices of the Task Force, is designed to build on and scale the success of the Global Citizenship Fellows Program by connecting students and faculty across the Jesuit network of some 200 colleges and universities worldwide through a shared Global Citizenship Course Module. Faculty across the network were invited to incorporate the course module into their classes during the spring 2023 semester.
The course module is a set of four recorded lectures (about 20 minutes each) and accompanying readings (about 20 pages each). The lectures address 1) global citizenship as a mindset and practice; 2) contemporary challenges and opportunities; 3) global citizenship and care for our common home; and 4) Jesuit universities and global citizenship.
Students taking classes with the course module will participate in at least one global Zoom dialogue with peers around the world to discuss global citizenship.
It is anticipated that the course module will be made available in fall 2023 semester and beyond as well.
The Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs at Georgetown University is serving as a secretariat for the project.
